The Forbidden City: Visiting Beijing’s Imperial Palace

The Forbidden City (Palace Museum) was home to 24 emperors across the Ming and Qing dynasties — a vast walled complex of nearly a thousand buildings at the very centre of Beijing. It’s the single most important historical site in China.

What to see

  • The grand central axis: the Meridian Gate, the Hall of Supreme Harmony, and the imperial throne rooms.
  • The quieter side palaces and the Imperial Garden at the north end.
  • The Treasure Gallery and clock collection (small extra fee).

Climb Jingshan Park opposite for the classic rooftop view over the whole palace.

Tickets & timing

  • Book online in advance with your passport — tickets are timed, capped, and routinely sell out.
  • Closed Mondays (except some holidays).
  • Enter at the Meridian Gate (south); you exit at the north, so plan onward travel.

Tips

  • Allow 3+ hours — it’s enormous.
  • Go early or late to dodge tour groups; mornings are calmer.
  • Carry your passport — it’s required to enter.
