How to Use China's High-Speed Trains (Foreigner's Guide)
China’s high-speed rail network is the largest and one of the best in the world — clean, punctual, and reaching 350 km/h. For most city-to-city trips under about five hours, the train beats flying once you count airport hassle. Here’s how to use it with confidence.
Booking tickets
You can book up to about 15 days ahead, and popular routes (and holidays) sell out, so don’t leave it to the last day.
- Trip.com (affiliate) — the easiest option for foreigners: English interface, foreign card accepted, e-ticket support.
- Railway 12306 — the official app with English version; cheapest but more fiddly to register.
Tickets are tied to your passport, which becomes your ticket — there’s usually no paper needed.
Seat classes
- Second class — comfortable, three-plus-two seating, perfectly good for most trips.
- First class — more legroom, two-plus-two seating, modestly pricier.
- Business class — lie-flat luxury at the front; worth it occasionally on long routes.
At the station
Arrive 45–60 minutes early — big stations are enormous and security takes time.
- Security check — bag scan and ID, like an airport.
- Find your waiting area using the departure boards (they show your train number and gate).
- Passport scan at the gate — tap or scan your passport to enter the platform; gates open a few minutes before and close strictly on time.
- Board your assigned car and seat (shown on the platform markers).
On board
- Seats are assigned; carriages are quiet, with power outlets and tray tables.
- Trolleys sell snacks and meals, but bringing your own food is normal and cheaper.
- Large stations have left-luggage and plenty of food before you board.
Tips
- Keep your passport handy — you’ll show it to book, enter, and sometimes on board.
- Train numbers starting G are the fastest; D and C are slightly slower high-speed services.
- Build in buffer time; the gate really does close a few minutes before departure.
Once you’ve ridden one, you’ll wonder why you ever flew domestically.
