Seeing Giant Pandas in Chengdu
Meeting a giant panda is a bucket-list moment, and Chengdu in Sichuan is the easiest place in the world to do it. The city is the heart of panda conservation.
Where to go
- Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding — the most popular, just north of the city, home to many pandas (and red pandas) in spacious enclosures.
- Dujiangyan Panda Base — quieter, and where some “panda keeper” volunteer experiences run.
- Bifengxia, further out, for a more natural setting.
Best time to visit
- Go at opening time (early morning). Pandas are most active and feeding before about 10am; by midday they’re often asleep.
- Cooler months and mornings mean livelier pandas — they wilt in summer heat.
Getting there & tickets
The Chengdu base is reachable by metro + shuttle or Didi. Skip-the-line tickets and tours with transfers are on Klook or Viator (affiliate). Pair it with our Chengdu itinerary.
Tips
- Arrive right at opening — it’s the single biggest factor in a good visit.
- Allow 2–3 hours; the base is large and green.
- Be respectful: no flash, no feeding, keep your voice down.
