What to Pack for China: A Minimalist Practical Checklist

China has everything you could need to buy on arrival, so don’t overpack. But a few items genuinely make the trip smoother — and a couple are hard to find locally. Here’s the practical list.

The essentials

  • Power bank & chargers — you’ll use your phone all day for maps, payments, and tickets. This is the one thing you’ll regret forgetting. If you plan to take domestic flights, make sure your power bank is CCC-certified.
  • Universal travel adapter — China uses Type A, C, and I sockets at 220V.
  • Your unlocked phone, with a VPN and eSIM set up before you go.
  • Printed version of reservation information in Chinese, most people don’t read alphabets in China.

Health & hygiene

  • Any prescription medication in original packaging, with a doctor’s note. Pack basics like painkillers and stomach remedies too, as brands differ.
  • International health insurance gives you security along the trip.

Clothing by season

  • Spring (Mar–May) & Autumn (Sep–Nov): mild and the best time to visit — layers and a light jacket.
  • Summer (Jun–Aug): hot and humid, especially in the south — breathable clothes, sunscreen, and a hat. The north can still surprise you with cooler evenings.
  • Winter (Dec–Feb): cold in the north (well below freezing in Beijing and beyond) — a proper coat, gloves, and thermals. The south is milder but damp.

Easy to forget

  • Comfortable walking shoes — you’ll cover a lot of ground.
  • A small day bag that zips securely for crowded areas.
  • Photocopies or photos of your passport and visa.
  • Phone number of your local embassy or consultate in case of any emergency.

Leave it at home

  • Bulky guidebooks (your phone does more).
  • Large amounts of cash — go cashless with Alipay. You can prepare about 2000-3000 CNY for small amount expense.
  • China is world’s factory. Anything you can easily buy cheaply on arrival, like hand-sanitizer, tissues, masks etc., enjoy China’s technology advancement and speed with delivery.

Pack light, bring the power bank, and you’re set.
