Tech & Electronics Shopping in China: Shenzhen & Beyond
China makes much of the world’s electronics, and shopping for tech here is a thrill — especially in Shenzhen, the country’s hardware capital.
Where to go
- Huaqiangbei (Shenzhen) — the world’s largest electronics market: floor after floor of phones, components, drones, accessories and gadgets you didn’t know existed.
- Big electronics malls in every major city for phones, laptops and cameras.
- Online via Alipay/WeChat mini-programs, though delivery suits longer stays.
What to know
- Bargain in the markets — first prices are negotiable.
- Check plug type, voltage and regional compatibility (e.g. phone bands) before buying.
- Warranties on market goods may not be international — ask.
- Beware counterfeits; for big brands, buy from official stores.
Tips
- Test everything before you pay and keep the receipt.
- Power banks must go in carry-on and be CCC-certified for domestic flights (packing list).
- Bigger buys can be shipped home — ask the shop, and check customs limits.
- Pay by Alipay/WeChat.
